Stairs
crashing down the stairs after elizabeth wurtzel, trying to fnd out if
she was real or just PR....
happened: sometime in 97 by: Lyle

i was coming up the stairs and i couldn't work out how that whole reflection thing was working on the office/private door and then i just started looking at the black and white tiles, they were really nice. I think we were pretty loaded by this point.

I went out through the mezzanine door at exactly the
right time. The Big Indian Film Star was almost up
the first flight of stairs from the bar, two bodyguards
behind. BIFS was out of breath, looking down at his
feet one after the other on the last few stairs.

He saw my shoes and looked up, breathing raggedly,
twisting his neck back round to look at the bodyguards.
By the time they realised something was happening -
they stumbled into BIFS's back - it was over - he
had half crumpled the strip of paper into a pocket,
fat watch catching on some loose stitching.

I stood aside and let them all pass. "Killer!" breathed
the last, relief misting from his nostrils, then on
up the last flight of stairs to the back door, where
a car was waiting. The time on the watch was 5 minutes
fast, just like mine.

I was 19, an American doing the junior year abroad thing in Paris and I had gone into London to "see the art" one weekend.

There was this "older" (24) ruggedly pretty boy, a look at the time I thought of as "so European!" walking down toward me and suddenly it was as if my world went into cinematic slow motion.
I looked up at him, agape, and smiled and he turned to me and said, "well come on then" and we went back downwards and continued out the door.

I was so excited thinking I had been swept up into some sort ofdream. When we got outside, he turned to me and said "well, now what?" And I didn't know. So, being the suave and graceful creature that I was, I turned on my heel and fled.
