ICA Experiences
Lower Gallery
As I stanced a-wondering,
I chanced apon a glance meandering,
closing, wilting,
our gazes met, a fixing,
a splash of colour in a city of grey

I was a young student new to London. I visited the ICA having been told it was one of the "cool" places to go. After wandering around a rather confusing and now unmemorable exhib, the Lower Gallery door was suddenly opened and I spied a table invitingly laid with full wine glasses. Taking a chance, I joined the crowd and was taken aback by blinding flashbulbs. The blonde chap at the table sweetly offered me a glass of wine and then I realized I was being photographed next to Andy Warhol ! My 15 secs. of fame. His exhib. really was "cool".

I remember leaving the cafe towards the entrance to get some
reading matter .I wanted to sit and read the ICA catalogue
while I was sitting alone...eating. After I'd grabbed the
literature, I went to return to the cafe and the door was
closed; with an iron bar slid into its slots keeping me out.

There was a woman, saying no. I said please and wined and
pouted my best. She gave in, turned and started to lift
the iron bar from its slots. I saw how heavy it was
supported by her skinny arms. I felt guilty for making
her lift that thing twice....my pouting should be reserved
for higher goals......but dinner was good.....and I was
glad to have "done" the ICA during my first 2 week visit
to London from the US.
